Fire Safety Week

This week Kindergartners started their second round of the alphabet. This around we're creating a picture dictionary. We're sound spelling the names of pictures we place in our books and reading Sound Box books to accompany each letter. In Math we're finishing up numbers 1-5 and next week starting a new Math unit.
Part of the week was spent testing Kindergartners on skills we've learned over the first quarter. The results of the testing will be shared with you during parent teacher conferences and will be the basis for the grades students have earned. Some of the testing was done in testing areas placed on the desk, encouraging students to keep their eyes on their work and other parts of the test were completed one on one. I stressed with students that they should show what they know as well as what they don't know so that I can help them to learn these skills.

We made fire safety patterns, we painted fire, made fire trucks and cut buildings for our Fire murals. Students were given homework to locate their smoke alarms, check the batteries and plan for a special meeting place in the event of a fire. Crestwood firefighters provided hats and coloring books for all our students and their visit made the week complete.

As a class we are making lots of progress. We can use some help with lots of chatty friends that talk when the teacher is giving directions and playful behavior during work periods. We are learning not to snatch things from one another and not to push and shove in line. Any and all extra support from parents and caregivers would be much appreciated. We continue to talk and process this daily, it is an on going skill I know we can master.

I showed the children pictures from their visit with the firefighters and they were delighted. By accident pictures posted on our blog are still on my SD card from the camera and the children saw these, they were excited to see these glimpses of their Kindergarten year so far. Many of the children had not seen these pics. PLEASE share the classroom blog with your students when you can, it's a wonderful tool to initiate conversation with your child about their day/ week and what's going on in and around our class.
