All About Me

We are spending a couple of weeks on All About Me. This unit helps Kindergartners explore themselves. We're talking about what we look like, what we like and a little about our families. We're reading books about children and special things about them. Each child is creating an All About Me Book that we'll be displaying in our hallway soon. Everyone is special and has special things about them and we're celebrating that. Math continues with patterning, we started with simple A/B patterns and will learn more complex patterns A/B/C patterns using shapes and colors. On Friday we did an experiment, taking advantage of the record breaking heat, we set two trays outside of the classroom. One tray contained things that we thought might melt and things we thought would not melt. We made predictions then tested our predictions. We have some great scientific thinkers!
Much of the first month of Kindergarten is learning how to live together in community. We spend time talking about how to talk to one another, how to share, how to use our manners and our biggest challenge, how to listen and follow directions. We get lots of compliments as we practice walking through the halls quietly. We share the materials placed on our tables, pencils, scissors and markers. We know our lunch routine and can enter the lunch room, and take care of our needs, whether it's sitting in our assigned area or purchasing lunch. Students leave the lunch room and go to the playground for lunch recess and line up when asked. Our attendance has been great. Kindergartners come in each day ready to learn, some have a slow start while others are enthusiastic and full of energy. By the end of our school day we're all on the same page and working hard at learning.
Check your child's monthly calendar for the letter of the day. Talk with your child about the letter and what project we did with the letter. Letters will come home at the end of the week, please continue to add these to your child's ABC binder.
You may have noticed that I am not sending the binders home each day. On days that we do not have many notes, I will keep the binders at school until we have several to send. Please continue to check your child's backpack for the binder when it arrives.
