Learning about 9/11 Social studies

While these children were not born 10 years ago, we're never too young to learn about our country and its history. I did some story telling, followed by reading the book "The day the world changed " and then we discussed. Children were able to grasp the idea that a sad event changed our country. That people made some bad choices and hurt others. They understood that people lost relatives and friends that they loved and that two buildings that once stood as a symbol in New York are no longer there. We talked about the Pentagon and the plane in Shanks ville. Children asked thoughtful questions as they processed the information. Children wanted to draw pictures afterwards during Center time. This became our bulletin board now on display in the hallway. We colored statue of liberty pictures with a flag background with the words September 11 and Remember. The discussion was stretched over a two day period to give children time to process. Each child was given a copy of the book "The day the World changed". You should be very proud of your children with the thoughtful, caring way which they were able to be a part of this discussion.

A wonderful display that you might want your family to see are the flags on Art hill in Forest park. There is one flag for each person lost on September 11, 2001.
