The Thanksgiving Feast

During the month of November we learned about Native Americans and Pilgrims. We looked at the globe and followed the trip of the pilgrims. We looked at a replica of an old sail ship and talked about what the pilgrim's voyage would have been like. We dyed our Indian clothing in coffee and made our designs with iron on fabric colors. We decorated tee pees, headbands and pretend bear skins with Indian symbols. We talked about food that was eaten and the first Thanksgiving harvest feast and learned that the first feast was 3 days long! (One story said the feast lasted 3 weeks) We culminated our activities with our own feast and held hands around our harvest and were thankful for our school, our families, friends, clothes and a cozy bed. Kindergartners made a Squanto snack to eat at the feast. The Indians taught pilgrims to plant fish in the soil to make it rich and make crops grow. We created soil from Oreo cookies, added gummy fish to the soil and planted candy corn, a yummy sweet treat that was enjoyed by all.
